History of Sophia Archives

Sophia Archives traces its origins to the establishment of the Historical Materials Compilation Committee in 1977, which was formed to compile the Jchi Daigaku-shi shiryshū (Historical Materials of the History of Jchi Daigaku). At that time, there was a growing need to systematically collect, record, and preserve the university’s historical materials to prevent their dispersal, and the committee was organized for this purpose. In 1979, the Jchi Daigaku-shi shiryshitsu ( Historical Materials Office) was set up within the General Affairs Division, continuing efforts to collect and organize documents and photographs related to the university. In 1980, the first volume of the Jchi Daigaku-shi shiryshū was published, and over the course of 15 years, the entire series was completed. In 2020, the organization was restructured as Sophia Archives, with the mission of collecting, preserving, and making accessible historical materials not only from Sophia University but also from all schools established by Sophia School Corporation. Today, in addition to preserving paper-based materials, Sophia Archives is actively engaged in digital archiving and providing information online.
